The Future

This project is still in progress and I would love to hear from anyone who has information, interesting stories or photographs about any  Brimer / Brymer / Brebner / Bremner / Braimer and other variants family members.

If you are a Brimer, Brymer, Bremner, Brebner or other variant surname male please consider doing a Y-DNA test there are only a limited number of you worldwide, and with some of you sharing the same line, there are relatively few branches still represented. The results so far can be seen at:

www.familytreedna.com/public/BRIMER-BRYMER/

If you are a female or male  with any of these surnames in your family tree please consider doing an autosomal DNA or “cousin” test. This can help link families where there are no longer any male name bearers surviving.

The research which is currently ongoing and / or planned is to:

Documentary Study

  • Research the records within the UK for the period between 1600-1837
  • Research the records within the UK pre 1600
  • Research records in all countries that the names have spread to
  • Expand the scope of the study to research records within the UK between 1837 and the present as well as all the above for the other variant names Braimer, Brebner, Bremner and others.
  • Research records relating to daughters and follow their families to modern days (useful for proving links with autosomal DNA testing)
  • Research wives and their ancestors (useful for proving links with autosomal DNA testing)

DNA Study

  • Identify and contact living male name bearers from untested lines both within and outside the UK with the aim of having at least two people (third cousin or greater) tested with 37 Y-STR on each line
  • Encourage females and males with any of the surnames in their family tree to do an autosomal DNA test to help link in those families who no longer have any male bearers or have an illegitimate birth at the top of their tree
  • Encourage Big Y testing where funds allow in each genetically different branch to learn more about the early formation of the surnames
